Equalling David Hemery to go second on UK all time list for 400m hurdles. 1 August 2010

Dai Greene delivered a world class performance to win the European Championships in Barcelona on Saturday 31 July. As leading European he performed when it mattered most to bring home the Gold for Great Britain and Wales and a new lifetime best.

Dai’s winning time of 48.12 seconds puts him second on the UK all-time list for 400m hurdles with Olympic Champion David Hemery. He matched the old World record set by Hemery in Mexico City back in 1968.

He was cheered on by friends and family in an electric atmosphere at the Olympic stadium on Saturday night, to bring home the first Gold of the night, before Jess Ennis took victory in the heptathlon and Mo Farah sealed Double Gold in the 5,000m.

Speaking to national press the following morning at the GB team hotel, he said:

“I’m over the moon, I came here to win and I’m really happy with my performance and the time! It would have been nice to get a bit closer to Kris Akabusi’s time (the British record of 47.82 seconds), but I know in the right race with some faster athletes I can get a bit closer soon.

“The Commonwealth Games is my next target now, it’s only every 4 years and I’m looking forward to wearing a Welsh vest.

“My first aim this year was to win the Europeans, so I’ve ticked that box. You need to be the best in Europe if you want to become the best in the world. A couple of years ago I had a few injuries and setbacks, so I can really appreciate the good times, but I’m not going to get carried away.”

Dai is racing in the Diamond league meeting in Stockholm on Friday 6 August before the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on 13 and 14 August.
