‘Most memorable victory ever’ at the World Championships. 19 August 2010

David Roberts rounded off his World Championships’ campaign with a special victory in the 100m Freestyle on Thursday night in Eindhoven.

With 50m remaining David was down in 6th place and worked his way through the field to seal the Gold medal, by the narrowest of margins.

He clocked 1:01.80, ahead of Australian Matthew Levy in 1:01.89 and American Lantz Lamback in 1:02:10. British team mate Matthew Walker finished in fourth place.

Afterwards he said:

“It was a massive relief to win, it has been difficult year and it’s just nice to come out the other side.

“I came here to win the 100m freestyle that was the important one to me. I couldn’t believe I was down in 6th with 50m to go, I just had to get my head down and give it absolutely everything.

“This Gold means more to me than any other medal that I have ever won! My Mum, Dad and Brother are here, they are super excited! I have just spoken to my girlfriend Agata at home, she is really happy!”
