David Weir and Tasha Danvers honoured at Annual Ceremony. 10 September 2010
Tasha Danvers and David Weir were amongst 400 guests celebrating the past, present and future of London youth sport at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Hall of Fame Evening at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday 9 September.
Both Tasha and David have fond memories of competing at the London Youth Games which kick started their sporting careers that has taken them to the heights of achieving medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The annual ceremony saw both athletes inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside other former London Youth Games competitors; Rio Ferdinand (football), Bradley Wiggins (cycling), Mo Farah (athletics) and Amanda Newton (netball). Between the six of them they have over 300 international appearances, 13 Olympic or Paralympic medals, 17 World Championship medals, 10 European Championship medals and 5 Commonwealth Games medals.
At the opening of the awards ceremony, the packed crowd were given a rousing speech by Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and the Olympics where he gave his backing to the London Youth Games.
He said: “The London Youth Games has been the launch pad for many of our top athletes and it is something that we want to build on with our nationwide Olympic-style school sports competition. Competitive sport can help us increase participation among young people - one of my top priorities in the run up 2012 - as well as help us unearth sporting talent for the future.”
The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event with all 33 London boroughs competing in 30 sports across 23 event days.
