Non Evans leads BBC Sport Wales Campaign

Launch of the BBC Unsung Hero Award for Wales. 22 September 2010

Non Evans launched the campaign today to urge everyone to nominate their BBC Sports Unsung Hero 2010 in Wales - an award to honour individuals from the world of grassroots sport.

The Swansea-born Welsh women’s rugby full back who will be competing for Wales in Olympic free style wresting at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi - was at the Welsh Institute of Sport along with her own unsung hero, 70-year-old Gwyn Griffiths, to launch the award in Wales.

Non knows how important these unsung heroes are to keeping local sport alive. She credits her own unsung hero Gwyn Griffiths - her speed, agility and fitness trainer - with helping kick-off her phenomenal sporting career.

“Gwyn has been a fantastic inspiration and great help to me over the years. He’s a speed, agility and fitness trainer, who is also a former 400 metres runner himself,” says Non.

“When I broke my leg a few years ago I really thought I would never run again, but it was Gwyn who got me back up and running again, he’s a truly inspirational trainer and just a great guy.”

Now in its eighth year, the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award recognises and rewards outstanding contribution by individuals at the grassroots level of local sport.

A winner is chosen in each BBC English Region and in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and the Wales Unsung Hero winner will be announced on Monday, December 6.

Each winner then gets the chance to join the sporting stars of today at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2010 at Birmingham’s LG Arena in December, where the overall BBC Sports Unsung Hero winner is announced.

Nominations for the BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award 2010 can be made at http://www.bbc.co.uk/sportsunsunghero using a printable form. Nominations can be made up until midnight on Friday 29th October.
