David Weir looks ahead to IPC World Championships

Named in GB & NI team heading for New Zealand. 28 September 2010

David Weir is one of four British defending Champions named by UK Athletics in the Aviva GB & NI team for the IPC World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand from 21-30 January 2011.

The event, which is the last major Paralympic event at senior level prior to the Paralympic Games in London, offers a significant competition opportunity in the countdown to 2012.

At the last World Championships in Assen, David picked up three Gold medals in the 100m, 400m and 1500m. He also took Silver in the 200m.

He has fond memories of competing in Assen, in what turned out to be a big year for David culminating in him being honoured at the British Athletics Writers Awards in London, for the Best Performance in a British Vest.

“The World Championships in 2006 were very successful for me; I overcame some big setbacks that year including a serious crash whilst training one day.

“I’m really looking forward to competing in New Zealand, I have never been there before, and so it’s a fantastic opportunity to see another part of the world. I will be training really hard this winter in the UK and then travel to New Zealand in early January after Christmas, ready for the Championships.”

“The World Championships are a really important event to compete against the best in the world before London 2012, which is already less than two years away!”

David, who is coached by Jenny Archer, will compete in the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and marathon, concentrating on the longer distances in New Zealand.
