Jamie backs Team Wales for success in Delhi

Definitive clients ready to take centre stage. 6 October 2010

Jamie Baulch has thrown his full support behind Team Wales in Delhi and predicts it will be one of Wales’ most successful ever Games.

Jamie, 37, won 11 medals throughout his career at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships. His best memories of the Commonwealths are the 4x400m relay battle with England at the Manchester Games in 2002 and his exploits over 400m with Iwan Thomas in Kuala Lumpur; he rates his 400m semi final as the “best race of his career”.

He said: “I can vividly remember the competing in every major Championships and you take away some amazing memories that stay with you forever! All the years of hard training come down to a matter of seconds for your individual event, and there is no hiding place! In one way, I don’t envy the pressure on each of our athletes as they compete in the Commonwealths but it will also be one of the best experiences of their lives.

“It is a very proud moment to represent your country and Wales has a raft of talent to follow, I know there will be some new stars to emerge! The eyes of the nation are now upon our athletes and I personally would like to wish them the very best of luck!”

At Definitive, Jamie now manages four of the Welsh athletes competing in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi: Non Evans, David Roberts, Tom Haffield and Dai Greene.

Jamie continued: “These Games are particularly important to me because I have worked so closely with four of the athletes competing and I can’t wait to see them in action now!

“Non Evans is a woman of many talents; she has previously won two silver Commonwealth medals for Judo and is the top point scorer for international women’s rugby in the world. This time, she is going for a medal in wrestling and has her sights set on London 2012.

“David Roberts is no stranger to medals, having already won 11 Paralympic gold medals in swimming. But the chance to represent Wales is something really special for David and he has endured a tough year, coming back from injury and even kidney stones in February. He was delighted to come back with the Gold he was aiming for at the recent Worlds Champs, so he can build on that now.”

Meanwhile, Tom Haffield starts the Games as Commonwealth record holder for his event, the 400m individual medley. Tom is quietly confident going into the Games and I know this could be his big breakthrough, so I’m just keeping my fingers crossed as he has worked so hard for this moment.

“In my sport of athletics, I can’t wait to see Dai Greene line up in the 400m hurdles, it was fantastic to see him win in Barcelona. I have never been nervous before watching another athlete, but that was something else seeing the manner of his victory in the Olympic stadium! I know he has a bright future ahead of him and representing Wales for the first time is a special feeling!

“I definitely have very high hopes for Wales this week at the Commonwealths, it’s a shame that some of the English athletes are missing but as a Welsh athlete you can’t beat putting on the Welsh vest and seeing the Welsh flags flying!”
