Gold for Dai in Delhi

Commonwealth Games and European Champion. 11 October 2010

Dai Greene rounded off a fantastic year by winning the Commonwealth Games title on Sunday 10 October, to add to his European Gold in Barcelona.

He started the Games as favourite and executed another terrific performance to bring home the first Gold for Wales of the Games. It came down to a close finish as Dai held off the fast finishing South African Louis Van Zyl to cross the line in 48.52 seconds with a dip for line.

Behind the South African, Rhys Williams snatched Bronze for Wales. Dai spoke to the media about the pressure he felt to deliver for Wales after his lap of honour;

“I had loads of people coming up to me all day and reminding me that we had not had a Gold yet!

“One person saying it was all right… but 25 or 30 people saying it meant the pressure started to build up.

“But I knew what I was capable of doing and I just wanted to do my team justice.”

Dai became the fourth Welshman to achieve the European and Commonwealth Games double in the same year, joining the illustrious group of Colin Jackson, Lyn Davies and Iwan Thomas.

He added:

“I am really pleased and my season could not have gone any better,” he added.

“I have won everything I have entered, the UK trials, the Commonwealth Games European Championships and the World Cup.

“I’m on such a high at the moment.”
