Storms to 1500m win at World Championships in New Zealand. 26 January 2011
David Weir made it a brilliant double in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Christchurch, sealing his 1500m title in another fast finish.
David repeated his success at the Beijing Paralympic Games with a 800/1500m double in his favourite events. His biggest rival Marcel Hug (Switzerland) led the field through the 400m, 800m and bell. But full of confidence David timed his race to perfection and made his move in the final 300m.
He clocked 3:10.93, with only two tenths of a second separating the three medallists. Marcel Hug had to settle for Silver and Saichon Konjen (Thailand) took Bronze.
“I didn’t expect him to go to the front so early,” said Weir of Hug’s early break into the first bend.
“I sat behind him but I was struggling until I got into my rhythm.”
As they hit the bell, David pushed through on the outside to play out a two-way battle with Hug in an exact replica of the story which had unfolded over the two-lap event three nights ago.
“I always want to perform at major championships and I feel great to be honest.
“You get the hunger for gold, of course you do, and for every one I get, I want another one!”
“I’m overwhelmed really to win two Golds, it means so much not just to me, but my family and coach Jenny Archer at home. I can’t believe it, I’ve done the double! But now I need to try and refocus again for the 5,000m final.”
David will be racing in the 5,000m final on Thursday 27 January.
