Weir beats Heinz Frei in Sprint Finish. 18 April 2011

David Weir produced a brilliant performance to win his fifth London Marathon title, with 500 days to go until the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

In a tactical race, it came down to the last stretch along the Mall, when David pulled away from Swiss rival and hero Heinz Frei in the final 300 metres.

David won three golds at the IPC World Championships in January, and is now the most successful male wheelchair athlete in the history of the London Marathon.

David said:

“It was tough all the way. I kept surging to see who could come with me. When Frei surged at the end I didn’t think I could keep up.

The new chair has made a big difference for me, it has to feel right to perform at my best.

I’ve won this one for my coach Jenny Archer’s mum who passed away recently. Its means a lot to win five titles, now the Paralympics feels that bit closer. I think it will really hit home when its the countdown for one year to go!”

David’s next race will be the Great Manchester Run on 15 May.
