Sensational Win at the World Championships. 1 September 2011

Welshman Dai Greene took the World Championship title in emphatic style in Daegu on Thursday night, coming off the final hurdle to secure Great Britain’s first Gold of the IAAF World Championships in a time of 48.26 seconds.

After the agony of two false starts, Dai produced the race of his career, to add to his European and Commonwealth titles last year. He overtook Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson in the home straight and American former World Champion Bershawn Jackson faded to sixth place after an explosive start on the lane inside Dai. South African LJ Van Zyl took Bronze in 48.80 seconds.

Draped in the Union Jack, Dai said to Channel 4 afterwards:

‘I was working really hard into the last hurdle and had so much momentum. I thought, ‘I’m not letting this go, this is mine’.

I have been working so hard for this for a number of years. I always believed I could make it but I had to dig deep to pull it out.

I do get a bit nervous but I seem to be able to handle it better than the rest. I’m really relieved and really proud.’
