Proud day in recognition of Services to Sport. 5 October 2011

Non Evans was delighted to received her MBE for her services to sport on Tuesday 4 October. She received her award from the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

In a wide-ranging sporting career, Non held the title of Welsh judo champion for an impressive eight years, competing at the Commonwealth Games on four occasions and winning two silver medals.

While in 2002, she became the first woman to compete in two sports at the same Commonwealth Games, when she took part in both weightlifting and judo disciplines. In 2010, Evans added a third sport to this list by competing in wrestling in the Delhi games.

Last year also saw Evans’ retirement from international women’s rugby, following a successful career which included 87 caps and 64 tries for Wales.

Reflecting on the special day, in the company of her proud parents, Non said:

“It was an amazing day being in Windsor Castle, surrounded by so many of the Royal family to receive my MBE. It made me feel so special, it was a huge honour. It was the perfect setting at Windsor Castle that I could ever have dreamed of, it was certainly a day I will always remember.”

Other sports stars honoured at the ceremony included England cricket captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower, who received OBEs after leading the national team to Ashes success and becoming World Twenty20 champions.
