The weather is getting on my nerves, it’s driving me insane.
The treadmill I use at St Mary’s in Roehampton is broken at the moment so the only training I can really do is outside.
We’ve had a bit of a nightmare with the weather and my heart sinks when I open the curtains in the morning. I’ve tried some days to wait for a break in it but most days that’s just not been possible so I just have to get out there, push and got soaked in my wheelchair.
I’ve picked up a few viruses, which I think are as a result of the changing weather. At the weekend, I had flu-like symptoms, I was feeling feverish, shivering, my teeth were chattering. It was only a 48-hour thing and thankfully I was back in training by Monday feeling no effects from it really.
The good news is I won’t be training in these conditions for too much longer. On the 16th of this month I fly out to Portugal for a 10-day training camp, which will be pretty intense.
I’m not staying out there for any longer as there won’t be a physio out there and, should I pick up any niggles or anything like that, there won’t be any back-up support.
Emily and Mason will be coming out as well, staying in a nice hotel not far away from where I’ll be based. I really miss them when I’m away, and worry about how they’re getting on so having them out here with me is great, even if it means I only see them for the afternoon in between sessions.
This 10 days is when the really intense training happens for the Paralympics, and we’ll be assured of some hot - it’s usually about 30 degrees every day - and more importantly dry weather
Obviously it’ll be a lot hotter than London - probably by about 10 degrees - but that was the case at the last Paralympics where we trained in Hong Kong, which was so much hotter than Beijing turned out to be.
I need to get the miles in as there’s a lot of racing at the Games especially now it’s been announced there will be three rounds of the 5000m so I’ll be pushing a lot on the roads out in Portugal.
I celebrated my 33rd birthday exactly a month ago today, got some time off training and spent a few days in Paris. We did the usual tourist things, we went to the Eiffel Tower but the queue for the lift was massive so we gave it a miss, we wandered around, ate in cafes and did some shopping.
It was such a short break but it was enough to really get the hunger back in training.
Now I’m gearing up to the Aviva London Grand Prix in two weekends time. Usually I compete at the Diamond League in Paris, which is tomorrow, but I’ve not had an invite so instead my focus is solely on doing the 800m in London and then onto the Paralympics.
