Weir stops Fearnley’s Decade of dominance. 26 January 2014

David Weir has today thwarted Australian wheelchair road racer Kurt Fearnley’s attempt to win a record ten consecutive GIO Oz Day 10k Championships in the 25th Anniversary year of the event.

Weir completed the course in 21 minutes and 30 seconds, with Fearnley just 0.5 seconds behind at 21 minutes, 31 seconds.  The duo also faced stiff opposition from Swisse Marcel Hug and Japanese Masayuki Higuchi who were close contenders throughout the race.

‘This is a fantastic win for me, the GIO Oz Day 10k is an inconic wheelchair race that I’ve always wanted to win. It is great to win it on Australia Day and in the anniversary year. I’ve come second twice and for me it was a case of third time lucky’ said Weir.

Runner-up Fearnley said, ‘It was hard work, it was one of those races where you put your head down and hurt yourself and hope that it is enough to hurt the bloke behind you but it wasn’t to be.  Having said that, I’m happy for Dave, he’s come all the way out here and this was his year’.
