Dai Greene reflects on meeting the stars on Sports Relief Show. 21 March 2010

The Olympic and Paralympic athletes, past and present that formed ‘The Choir’ for Sport relief on Friday 19 March were described as delivering one of the best moments of the show by James Corden (“Smithy”) and were watched by a peak of nearly 10 million viewers on the BBC.

Dai Greene reflected on the amazing experience of singing live, not only on prime time TV but earlier in front of Robbie Williams.

“We arrived quite early on Friday night, so there was a lot of waiting around and meeting people back stage. At one point, I was walking round the corridor with Jamie (Baulch), when he said wouldn’t it be funny to bump into Robbie Williams!

“A few seconds later, we literally bumped into Robbie and he then asked for us all to perform in front of him, so he could hear the choir, before our live performance!

“Singing backstage with Robbie Williams is something quite surreal; it doesn’t get much bigger than that! We got it spot on, in fact after that it was quite difficult to keep up and ready for the main performance, we were a bit flat for a while.

“The crowd were quite noisy for the live performance; everyone said it would be quiet! We were pretty nervous, but the VT they played beforehand made us laugh!

“Gareth Malone was fantastic, getting our attention was difficult at times in rehearsals, but he certainly got the best out of us!

“On reflection, I have never done anything further away from my comfort zone really, I have never done any singing! I arrived late on Tuesday after training first in Bath, which was my first day of rehearsal. So, when I arrived, I had to sing – row, row, row your boat, in front of everyone! After that, anything was possible!

“I feel so lucky to have worked with Gareth Malone and sung with such a special group of athletes in the Choir. Hopefully we will get the chance to sing together again, maybe!”
