Aviva Performance of the day in Birmingham and World records at Swiss Open. 28 June 2010
Four weeks away from the European Championships in Barcelona, Dai Greene produced a fantastic performance to consolidate his position as European Number 1, winning the 400m hurdles at the Aviva European Trials & UK Championships.
After qualifying comfortably in the heats, Dai was delighted to clock a new season’s best of 48.77 seconds in the final and retain his UK title which sealed his automatic selection for the GB & NI team. In second place was fellow Welshman Rhys Williams.
Dai’s stand out performance earned him the Aviva Performance of the day award on the final day of the UK Championships in Birmingham.
At the Swiss Open in Arbon, David Weir and Daniel Lucker had a busy weekend of competition.
David Weir lined up in the T54 800m, 400m and 5,000m in fields that resembled Paralympic Games finals. In a fast 800m, he finished second only to a world record from Marcel Hug from Switzerland, in 1:31.12. One of the toughest world records in wheelchair racing has stood since 2001. David clocked 1:32.66 ahead of his long term rival Kurt Fearnley in third place and London Marathon winner Josh Cassidy.
In the 5,000m, David took second behind Marcel Hug in 10:06.10 and second in the T54 400m with a time of 46.88 seconds. Daniel Lucker posted good times in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m against some tough opposition.
On Thursday, in the Arbon Track meeting, David Weir posted a fantastic personal best in the 5,000m but was disappointed to lose his old world record by fractions of a second to Marcel Hug who won the race. David set the previous world record of 9:54.82 in Atlanta 2007.
He finished second to Hug by only one tenth of a second, clocking 9:53.15 seconds to signal his return to top form. In a terrific race, there were five athletes inside the previous world record time.
Another fantastic race saw Marcel Hug take victory in the 1500m to break another World record, also held by David Weir. David clocked 2:55.25 inside the previous world record and Hug recorded a time of 2:54.51, with another five athletes dipping under 2:56.
Dan Lucker set two personal bests in the 400m and 1500m, with times of 52.32 and 3:14.21.
